Can I Use AI to Write an Australian Government Job Application?

See where preparation ends, what a faithful rewrite preserves and why removing names is not enough.

Preparation and assessment are different tasks

Start with the vacancy, not the tool. Read the advertisement, candidate pack, portal declarations and instructions for the particular task. A rule about preparing an application cannot answer every question about an assessment.

Read the task, not just the stage name

Preparing to show a skill ≠ showing it in an assessment

Illustrative activities below are fictional. The actual vacancy instructions govern.

  1. Application drafting

Organise your own genuine examples into a clearer response.

Check this specific use is permitted.
  2. Practice beforehand

Rehearse with an invented practice question before the actual task.

    Preparation rules still apply.
  3. Performing the assessed task

Answer the interview question or complete the exercise being assessed.

Stop: no AI during a live assessment.
The boundary is the task, not the location. A take-home case study can still be an assessment. ATO and Education distinguish preparation from performing assessments without AI assistance. Ask the recruiter if you cannot tell which task you are doing.

ATOLast updated 24 September 2026

AI can supplement your ideas and writing; critically review suggestions and keep your own voice. The ATO permits preparation, but expects no AI assistance during the interview or assessment itself. Tell the ATO about AI use and explain how you used it when asked.

EducationChecked 23 October 2026

Its guidance describes organising ideas, refining drafts and practice. Your work, judgement and verification remain yours; you may be asked to explain AI use. Interviews, skills assessments and other assessment activities require your own capability without AI-generated responses or assistance.

These are agency-specific examples, not blanket APS, state or council permission. Education’s date is our source check, not a claimed update date. Another process may be more restrictive. If instructions are silent, unclear or conflicting, ask the current recruitment contact before using AI.

Change the structure. Keep the facts.

Where this specific drafting help is permitted, clearer writing should preserve what you did, who made the decision and what the evidence actually shows.

Fictional worked example · all notes, claims and numbers are invented

A clearer sentence needs no new achievement

Structural assistance is shown only as an example of editing where the vacancy permits it.

1 · Applicant’s own notes

  • I proposed a triage trial.
  • My manager approved it.
  • The team tested it for four weeks.
  • Unassigned enquiries: 12 before, 3 after.

The teaching facts to preserve. In your application, use your own verified experience.

2 · Structure, same facts

“I proposed a triage trial, which my manager approved. During the team’s four-week trial, unassigned enquiries fell from 12 to 3.”

What stayed fixed: your contribution, the manager’s authority, the team, the period and the counts. The comparison does not prove wider impact or causation.

3 · Fabrication to reject

“I led a service-wide transformation, authorised the new process and increased customer satisfaction by 40%.”

Reject: invented leadership, wider scale, approval authority and a satisfaction result that the notes do not support.

Edit the order and clarity; verify every claim. Plausible language cannot supply evidence. If a draft adds a fact, confirm it privately or remove it.
See the fact check behind the fictional rewrite

Keep your own evidence checks privately in an appropriate place. This fictional ledger demonstrates the checks; it is not an invitation to upload employment records.

ClaimFictional teaching factCheck privatelyEditing decision
ContributionApplicant proposed a triage trialOwn notes and an appropriate referee’s knowledgeKeep “I proposed”; do not widen to a service-wide transformation
AuthorityManager approved the trialDecision record; check privately, do not upload itDo not give the applicant the manager’s approval authority
Team and resultTeam’s four-week trial: unassigned enquiries fell from 12 to 3Fictional register comparison over the four-week trialKeep the period and counts; do not claim causation or a wider service result
Unsupported suggestion“Increased customer satisfaction by 40%”No supporting evidenceDelete it; plausible is not verified

Check titles, dates and qualifications too. Read the final example aloud without the tool: explain your decision, others’ contributions and how you know the result. Verify, narrow or remove anything you cannot support.

Removing a name leaves more than you think

The ATO says to assume prompts and supporting information could become public. Education warns that information may be stored, used or disclosed outside your control; its employees must not enter official or sensitive material into non-approved tools.

Fictional privacy example · no real person or case

A placeholder is not the same as a safe prompt

Names removed. Clues remain.

“[Person] was the only night-shift coordinator1 at [workplace] during the six-day outage2. The attachment is an internal complaint about a health-related absence3.”
  • 1 · Distinctive role: someone may still be recognisable.
  • 2 · Specific event: details can identify a case in combination.
  • 3 · Sensitive material: the complaint and attachment remain a problem after names are removed.

Practise structure with an invented task

“Using an invented service enquiry, show the order: problem → my action → result to verify. Do not add achievements.”

No real case or attachment is supplied. This teaches how to organise an example; fictional experience is not evidence to submit as your own.

For your application, choose genuine facts you can appropriately share, or prepare the example without uploading the underlying case.

Check the remaining information, not just the missing names. Redaction does not approve a tool or override employer restrictions.

Keep personal identifiers, referee details, customer information, confidential attachments and sensitive or official material out. Check employer restrictions and the tool arrangements too. Redaction alone does not make an upload appropriate, approved or legally compliant.

What if my example needs confidential context?

Choose another genuine example or prepare the response without uploading that material. Placeholders do not remove distinctive events, internal details or the sensitivity of an attachment. An invented practice task can teach structure; it cannot become evidence of your experience.

Choose the next action

Use this short path to find what needs attention. Your selections cannot verify the recruiting agency’s rules or grant permission.

  1. Read the vacancy rules
  2. Protect information
  3. Preserve the facts
  4. Ask if unclear

Pause — ask the recruitment contact

Read the current vacancy pack and task instructions. If they are silent, unclear or conflicting, ask whether this specific use is permitted before using AI. Silence is not permission.

Changing stage resets the rules answer. No uploads, saving, submission or automated approval; selections clear on reload.

Optional final review before using drafting help
  • Agency and vacancy AI rules checked. Read the current advertisement, candidate pack and any recruiter instructions. Ask about conflicts or silence.
  • Information removed and remaining material appropriate. Do not enter personal, referee, customer, sensitive, confidential or official information. Check tool and employer restrictions; redaction alone is not approval.
  • Every factual claim verified. Check titles, dates, qualifications, responsibility, numbers and outcomes. Remove claims you cannot substantiate.
  • I can explain every example myself. You should be able to discuss your decisions, contribution and evidence without AI assistance.
  • Disclosure instructions addressed. Follow this process’s transparency requirements and be ready to explain use if asked. Do not assume one rule applies everywhere.

This review is not approval, legal advice or a security clearance. Preparation permission does not carry into an assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Must everyone disclose AI use?

These two sources do not establish a universal disclosure obligation. The ATO asks candidates to be transparent about use; Education says you may be asked to explain it. Follow your process’s actual declarations and questions, and keep a truthful account of the help you used.

Can AI supply a stronger achievement?

It can suggest structure where permitted, but it cannot supply a missing achievement. Reject invented qualifications, numbers, authority and causal claims, even if they sound plausible. Keep your own judgement and voice.

What if I cannot tell whether the task is assessed?

Pause and ask the current recruiter. A timed response, recorded activity or take-home exercise may assess your own capability. Do not rely on a preparation policy while performing the actual task, and do not use AI during a live interview or assessment.
